12 killed as cyclone Amphan batters Bengal, Odisha; restoration work underway in Kolkata

Kolkata: Severe cyclonic storm Amphan made landfall in West Bengal and Odisha causing widespread damages in both the states. At least 12 people have been killed in storm-related incidents so far. The National Disaster Relief Force (NDRF) is carrying out relief restoration work.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, monitoring the situation from the state secretariat, claimed at least 10-12 people lost their lives yesterday. "Area after area has been ruined. I have experienced a war-like situation today. At least 10-12 people have died. Nandigram, Ramnagar....the two districts of North and South 24 Parganas are destroyed," she said.

Trees uprooted and waterlogging in several parts of Kolkata due to the cyclonic storm. Restoration work by National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel is underway at the Airport Road in Kolkata, West Bengal: SN Pradhan, Director General of NDRF.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), yhe cyclone is very likely to weaken into a deep depression during the next 3 hours.

Expressing concerns, West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar, meanwhile, said, "I am distressed at the loss of lives and property due to cyclone Amphan. Was in constant touch with agencies for the last few days."

Adding, "Their commitment has minimised damage. It has left behind a trail of destruction. Worst since decades. All need to come forward for massive relief work."

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has shared images of the first tropical cyclone of the 2020 season - Amphan - in the North Indian basin.

"#Amphan, the first tropical cyclone of the 2020 season in the North Indian basin, has made landfall. The powerful storm slammed ashore near the border of eastern #India and #Bangladesh, delivering substantial storm surge to coastal areas, (sic)" NASA tweeted.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the cyclone is very likely to weaken into a deep depression during the next 3 hours.

"The Amphan cyclone layover Bangladesh as a cyclonic storm and it is very likely to continue to move north-northeastwards and weaken further into a Deep Depression during next 3 hours and into a Depression during subsequent 6 hours," said IMD

Republic Day 2020: ITBP personnel salute the nation at 17,000 feet in Ladakh's freezing temperature

Ladakh:  The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel celebrated India's 71st Republic Day at 17,000 feet in the freezing temperature of Ladakh.
