Ladakh: The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel celebrated India's 71st Republic Day at 17,000 feet in the freezing temperature of Ladakh. The temperature in Ladakh is minus 20 degrees Celsius.
A video shared by news agency ANI shows the 'Himveers' dressed in white uniforms and chanting slogans of "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and "Vande Mataram" as the Tricolour flies high on the snowy mountains. Two of the soldiers held the Tricolour as they marched in the snow.
While sharing the video of the ITBP personnel's celebration, the news agency wrote, "Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) personnel with the national flag celebrating Republic Day at 17000 feet in the snow today. The temperature in Ladakh at present is minus 20 degrees Celsius. 'Himveers' chanting 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Vande Mataram'."
This year, a total of 15 ITBP personnel have been conferred with medals on Republic Day.
The ITBP, one of the five Central Armed Police Forces of India, was raised on October 24, 1962. Presently, the ITBP personnel are deployed on border guarding duties from Ladakh's Karakoram Pass to Arunachal Pradesh's Jachep La covering 3,488 km of the Indo-China border and manning Border Outposts on altitudes ranging from 9,000 to 18,700 in the Western, Middle and Eastern sectors of the Indo-China border.
The ITBP is a specialised mountain force in which most of the officers are professionally trained mountaineers and skiers. The force which is the first responder for natural disaster has been conducting several rescue and relief operations across the country.
