OnePlus is finally closer than ever to launch smartphones that support wireless charging

OnePlus has seemingly confirmed wireless charging support on its upcoming OnePlus 8 series as the Chinese company joined the Wireless Power Consortium or WPC. Notably, the consortium managed the Qi wireless charging used by almost all smartphone vendors. The listing of OnePlus brand is now live on the consortium page and mentions the brand as "WPC membership: Full member."
OnePlus has been one brand that has redefined the mid-premium segment with its flagship smartphones and has captured decent market share in the sub-Rs 40,000 segments in India riding high on the success of its OnePlus 5, OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 7 series. However, there has been one constant qualm - no wireless charging - raised by consumers and even some reviewers who have highlighted this for almost every OnePlus device launched so far. This may finally change with the OnePlus 8 series.
We expect the OnePlus 8 Pro to support Qi wireless charging while OnePlus 8 may not get the feature. This could be done to differentiate between the Pro and the regular model.

OnePlus 8 series: What we know so far

The OnePlus 8 series is expected to debut by May 2020, and the company may unveil the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. In 2019, the company launched the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro. To recall, the OnePlus 7 6GB RAM and 128GB storage model was launched at Rs 32,999 while the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage model was launched at Rs 37,999 in India. The OnePlus 7 Pro, on the other hand, was launched at Rs 48,999. We can expect the OnePlus 8 series to be priced at similarly.
Preliminary leaks suggest that OnePlus 8 series may introduce punch-hole display design replacing both waterdrop and pop-up camera designs that we saw on the OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus 7T Pro, OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7T.
It is expected to come in two screen sizes - 6.4-inch AMOLED display on the OnePlus 8 while OnePlus 8 Pro featuring a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel. It is likely to pack a Snapdragon 865 processor coupled with 8GB RAM. In terms of battery, the smartphone is expected to pack up to 4500mAh battery.
