Railway fare hike: Your train ride may be costlier today. Details here

The railways announced a two paise/km hike in fares of mail/express non-AC trains and four paise/km hike in the fares of AC classes. On the New Year's eve, the railways announced fare hike across its network, excluding suburban trains, effective from January 1, 2020, according to an order issued on Tuesday. While suburban fares remain unchanged, ordinary non-AC, non-suburban fares were increased by 1 paise per km of journey. The railways also announced a two paise/km hike in fares of mail/express non-AC trains and four paise/km hike in the fares of AC classes. The fare hike is also applicable to premium trains such as Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Duronto, according to the order. In the Delhi-Kolkata Rajdhani, which covers a distance of 1,447 km, the hike at the rate of 4 paise per km will be around Rs 58. 170 held for drunk driving as New Year festivities gather steam in Mumbai

As traffic police fanned out in the suburbs with breathalysers, a senior official said 170 people have been held so far for drunken driving in Mumbai on New Year's eve. The number of people gathered at Juhu beach for New Year festivities, as on 11pm on Tuesday, was less than last year though celebrations were gathering momentum as the midnight approached, said police officials manning the area. A 28-year-old labourer was electrocuted when he fell and came in contact with a high tension wire while working at Vasai railway station in Maharashtra's Palghar district, police said on Wednesday. The station authorities immediately cut off power supply at the site. The body was brought down and sent for postmortem, he added.

DoT meets telecom operators, vendors to discuss 5G trials

New Delhi:  A day after the government said all operators will be allowed to participate in the upcoming 5G trials, the Department of Telecom (DoT) held a meeting with various service providers and equipment vendors, including Huawei, to discuss the way forward. The meeting on Tuesday, chaired by Telecom Secretary Anshu Prakash, lasted for over an hour. An official with one of the telcos said that all operators attended the meeting. A Huawei executive, who was present at the meeting, declined to comment on the proceedings. Telecom Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday said the government will allocate airwaves to all telecom service providers for conducting trials of super-fast speed 5G networks. As things stand today, India will not bar any equipment suppliers in the upcoming trials for 5G. ISRO to launch Chandrayaan 3 in 2020; mission to cost less than Chandrayaan 2

New Delhi:  India will launch Chandrayaan-3 in 2020, Union Minister Jitendra Singh said on Tuesday, asserting that the mission cost will be less than Chandrayaan-2. Singh, who is the Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office, said it is wrong to term Chandrayaan-2 as a disappointment since it was India's maiden attempt to land on the lunar surface and no country could do so in its first attempt. "Yes, the lander and rover mission will mostly likely happen in 2020. However, as I have said before, the Chandrayaan-2 mission cannot be called a failure as we have learnt a lot from it. There is no country in the world that has landed on its first attempt. The US took several attempts. But we will not need so many attempts," Singh said. He added that the experience gathered from Chandrayaan-2 and available infrastructure will bring down the cost of Chandrayaan-3. Cold wave continues in Delhi, temperature drops to 2.4 degrees C; IMD predicts respite in coming days

New Delhi:  The situation in Delhi still remains grim with cold wave continuing to mark its presence in the national capital. According to news agency ANI, the minimum temperature at Safdarjung was recorded at 2.4 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. Visuals from India Gate present a picture with a dense fog that continues to cloud several parts of Delhi.  On Tuesday, however, the residents of the national capital got some respite from the bone-chilling cold after the temperature at Safdarjung Road was recorded at 4 degrees Celsius. However, a thick layer of fog was witnessed throughout the city in the morning, reducing the visibility to less than 200 metres.  The extreme weather has been causing several flights and trains to be delayed. At least 34 Delhi-bound trains were delayed by at least 15 hours due to dense fog in several parts of northern India, on Tuesday.
